History
The Institute of Anthropology and Ethnography was organized in Leningrad in 1933 on the basis of the Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography of Peter the Great, which grew out of the Kunstkammer (founded in 1714), and the Institute for Research on the Peoples of the USSR (Institut issledovanii narodov SSSR). The latter had been organized in 1930 on the basis of the Commission for Study of Tribal Structure of the Population of Russia and Contiguous States (Komissiia po izucheniiu plemennogo sostava naseleniia Rossii i sopredel'nykh gosudarstv), which had been established after the 1917 Revolution.
The Institute was renamed the Institute of Anthropology, Archeology, and Ethnography (IAAE) in 1935. After the Institute of the History of Material Culture (IIMK) of the Academy of Sciences became a separate institution in 1937, the Institute of Ethnography (IE) was reorganized and renamed accordingly, continuing its base in Leningrad.
In 1943, a specialized research group (division) was established in Moscow. The Institute was renamed in honor of N.N. Miklukho-Maklai in 1947, and in 1950, its headquarters was moved to Moscow. Thereafter, a division of the Institute, together with the Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography, remained in Leningrad (see E–29). The Moscow Institute received its present name in September 1991.
The archive of the Institute was established in 1943.

N.B. Part of the archival records of the Institute have been transferred for permanent retention by the Archive of the Russian Academy of Sciences (E–1, fond 142, 1936–1991). The annotation of fond available electronically: http://www.isaran.ru/isaran/isaran.ph....
