Library facilities
The BIN Library (officially a division of BAN) has extensive literature on botany (ca. 600,000 volumes). Its most important basis was the book collections of Moscow University professors Kh.F. Stefan, N.I. Kuznetsov, V.A. Transhel', and E.V. Vul'f, and the library of the Gorenki Botanical Garden of Count A.K. Razumovskii.
The Library retains some 3,000 items which would be classed as archival materials, with approximately 2,000 drawings (17th–19th cc.). There is a unique collection of drawings of plants, partially published, including 18 watercolors on parchment by the Swiss seventeenth-century artist Maria Sibylla Merian (from the M.S. Vorontsov collection), a collection of Japanese plant representations from the mid–nineteenth century of the botanists Philipp Franz von Siebold (1,003 drawings) and K.P. Tunberg (306 drawings), a collection of watercolors on paper—“Bouquet of Eastern Siberia”—(1844) of the Decembrist P.I. Borisov, and original illustrations for the work of the botanists K.I. Maksimovich, A.F. Postel's, and others, produced by artists of the Imperial Botanical Garden, including A. Mattes (1825).
There are dissertationson botanical subjects defended in the Institute, predominantly from 1945 to the present.
The library reference facilities include alphabetic and systematic catalogues and a special subject card catalogue with references to approximately 1,200,000 items (printed works, manuscripts, microfilms, and microfiches). Copying facilities are available in the library.
