History
The Zoological Museum was established as a separate institution in 1832 by the Imperial St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences on the base of the zoological collections of the Kunstkammer, and opened to the public in 1838. When the Zoological Institute was organized on the basis of the museum in 1931, the Zoological Museum hence became a laboratory of the Institute. The library was started as part of the museum in 1832. Most of the archival materials from the Zoological Museum are now concentrated in the archive and the library of the Institute, while the museum continues to operate under the Institute.
