Holdings

Total: 3,599 fonds; 2,558,648 units; 1917–to present (some documents of late 19th–early 20th cc.)

Before the April 2013 reorganization TsAGM (earlier TsMAM) itself held records of various postrevolutionary local institutions of government and administration, industry, construction, transport, communications, culture, education, healthcare, and other public organizations, that functioned in or pertained to the city of Moscow.
The records of agencies of state government and administration are represented most importantly by the fonds of the Moscow City Soviet of Workers’ Deputies (Mossovet) and the Moscow City Executive Committee (Mosgorispolkom), from the years 1931–1991. There are scattered records of military-revolutionary committees from the early postrevolutionary period. Records of raion soviets and raion executive committees are extant mainly only from 1942 through 1993, since many of the earlier records, especially those of the executive committees, were destroyed in 1941. The archive retains the records of organs of justice, courts, and prosecution, namely the Moscow Soviet of People’s Judges, raion people’s courts, the Administration of the Moscow Militia, and other organs of order and justice.
A large complex of fonds includes the records of agencies of economic administration and subordinated enterprises, institutions, and organizations, such as the Council of the National Economy of the Moscow City Economic Region and its branch administrations. In addition to official records of state institutions, the archive likewise retains factory records (such as those of the ZIL Automobile Factory and the Dinamo Electrical Machine-Building Factory), and those of construction and trade enterprises. In the sphere of transportation and communication are the holdings of the Moscow Civil Air Transport Administration, the Administration of the Moscow Railroad and other railways based in Moscow, the Moscow Metropolitan (subway [metro]) Administration, and communication agencies, such as the Moscow Post Office (Moskovskii pochtamt).
Records of public education are represented by the fonds of city and raion departments of public education, the Moscow City Palace of Young Pioneers, and the Main Department of Vocational Training, along with records of individual schools and institutions of secondary and higher education, including the Moscow State University (MGU).
The archive holds the records of trade unions—the Moscow City Soviet of Trade Unions (MGSPS, since 1931) and its branches—and of volunteer societies, such as the Moscow City Society of Inventors, among others.
As of the 2005 reorganization and abolishment of the separate Central Archive of Literature and Art (TsALIM), over most of the holdings (165 fonds) formerly held by TsALIM, were transferred to TsAGM. This means that it now holds the main complex of records of agencies administering Moscow cultural affairs, such as the Administration for Art, the Administration for Cinematography, and the Administration for Publishing and Book Distribution of the Moscow City Executive Committee; the Committee on Cultural of the Government of Moscow, as well as records of cultural divisions of raion executive committees. Accordingly, documentation in these fonds reflect all aspects of the cultural life of the capital from 1925 to 1991. Censorship files in such fonds as the Administration for Protection of State Secrets in Print (Upravlenie po okhrane gosudarstvennykh tain v pechati) of the Moscow City Executive Committee (1943–1991) and Open Joint-Stock Company “Moscow Worker” (“Moskovskii rabochii”) (1946–2001), also contain personnel files.
TsAGM has also acquired the records of major Moscow publishing houses such as “Mosizdat,” “Kommunist,” the Moscow Division of “Lenizdat,” and “Moskovskii rabochii;” large museums, such as the Ostankino Estate Museum, the K.A. Timiriazev State Bological Musum, the State Darwin Museum, the Russian State Polytechnical Museum, the Museum of the History of Moscow, the V.V. Maiakovskii Museum, the Borodino Battle Panorama, the Andrei Rublev Museum of Early Russian Art, and the Kolomenskoe Museum-Preserve; records of the N.G. Chernyshevskii Moscow Institute of Philosphy, Literature, and History (MIFLI); records of many Moscow theaters, art and music schools, and so forth.

History:
The Central Municipal Archive of Moscow (TsMAM) was formed in 1993, as a result of renaming what had been in the Soviet period the Central State Archive of the October Revolution and Socialist Construction of the City of Moscow (TsGAORSS g. Moskvy). TsGAORSS g. Moskvy itself was in turn established in 1976 on the basis of the postrevolutionary holdings of the earlier the Central State Archive of the City of Moscow (Tsentral'nyi gosudarstvennyi arkhiv g. Moskvy—TsGA g. Moskvy), which had been founded in 1963. Before that, postrevolutionary records from the city of Moscow had been held in the State Archive of the October Revolution and Socialist Construction of Moscow Oblast (GAORSS MO). Those records were earlier part of the Archive of the October Revolution (AOR), founded in 1925 as part of the Moscow Guberniia (after 1929, Oblast) Archival Bureau.
Since 1993, scientific-technical documentation from Moscow institutions that was housed in the archive was transferred to the newly established the Central Archive of Scientific-Technical Documentation of Moscow—TsANTDM, fonds of many cultural institutions and other agencies relating to art and literature were transferred to the Central Archive of Literature and Art of Moscow (TsALIM, later abolished in 2005 as a separate repository), and fonds of personal papers and related collections were transferred to the Central Archive of Documentary Collections of Moscow (TsADKM, then TsMAMLS).
The January 2005 reorganization involved not only the fact that TsMAM was renamed TsAGM (Tsentral'nyi arkhiv goroda Moskvy). At the same time, the Central Archive of Literature and Art of Moscow (TsALIM) was abolished, and most of its holdings were transferred to TsAGM.
